1969 Honda CB750 Sandcast Restoration Timelapse
Переглядів 1,1 млн5 років тому
I restored a 1969 Honda CB750 Sandcast in my tiny garage and captured it with my iPhone. You can see more of my work at my website: www.ujenimotors.com Answers to a few common questions: 1. Indeed, I did use the original pistons. They were undamaged and showed no signs of abuse. They were easily within spec too. I cleaned them gently, installed fresh rings, honed the cylinders and ended up with...

    I RELUCTANTLY SOLD MY 1970 (MANUFACTURED 12/69) HONDA CB750 K0 MOTORCYCLE WITH 45,191 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, Vin #: CB7501016269, ENGINE #: CB750E-1016228 FOR US$ 11,000 TO A CUSTOMER IN DENMARK MORE THAN 20-YEARS AGO. THIS AMAZING MOTORCYCLE CHANGED THE PATH OF MY LIFE, AND OWNED ME FOR MORE THAN 35 WONDERFUL YEARS! IT WAS PURCHASED IT IN THE SUMMER OF 1972 WITH LESS THAN 4,000 MILES ON IT FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER FOR $935.00 (PLUS "USE TAX" AND "TRANSFER FEES", THOSE STATE BASTARDS!). BECAUSE OF A DESIRE TO PRECISELY MAINTAIN THIS MOTORCYCLE, I WENT TO MY LOCAL HONDA DEALER (KOLBE HONDA) AND ORDERED THE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL. I LOOKED AT THE REQUIRED TOOL LIST AND SAW THIS "VACUUM CARBURETOR SYNCHRONIZER" AND WENT TO THE KOLBE PARTS MANAGER WHO TOLD ME THE PRICE WAS $387.00! SINCE THIS WAS MORE THAN ONE THIRD OF WHAT I PAID FOR THE ENTIRE BIKE, I RODE TO THE LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE AND PURCHASED FOUR VACUUM GAUGES, 3-16" RUBBER VACUUM LINE, "BUNDY" BRAKE LINE TUBING, AND FOUR METRIC SCREWS THAT MATCHED THE PORTS ON THE CARBURETORS. LOOKING AT THE SMALL PHOTO IN THE MANUAL OF THE SYNCHRONIZER, I REALIZED I NEEDED TO PURCHASE FOUR "NEEDLE VALVES" AT THE AQUARIUM STORE TO DAMPEN THE INTAKE PULSATIONS. I BUILT A COPPER MANIFOLD AND ATTACHED THE FOUR DISASSEMBLED GAUGES TO A VACUUM PUMP (AN OLD REFRIGERATOR COMPRESSOR) AND LEARNED TO CALIBRATE THE ANEROID GAUGES BY BENDING THE BOURDON TUBE SO THAT THEY ALL TRACKED EACH OTHER, THEY DIDN'T COME THAT WAY FROM THE FACTORY! I CUT THE BUNDY TUBING INTO LENGTHS, AND BRAZED IT TO THE METRIC SCREWS THAT I HAD DRILLED AND ADDED RUBBER O-RINGS. AFTER COMPLETING AND TESTING THE PROTOTYPE, I WENT BACK TO THE PARTS MANAGER AND SHOWED IT TO HIM AND HE SAID HOW MUCH FOR A QUANTITY OF TEN? AFTER NEGOTIATING A PRICE WITH HIM, ON MAY-15-1972 (MY 20TH BIRTHDAY) I FORMED MY FIRST COMPANY, THE "FOUR DESIGNS COMPANY" TO MANUFACTURE MY FIRST COMMERCIAL PRODUCT: THE "VACU-TUNE" CARBURETOR SYNCHRONIZATION GAUGE SET FOR HONDA FOUR MOTORCYCLES (I SOLD MORE THAN 3,000 OF THE GAUGE SETS). I SOLD THE COMPANY TO MY JR. HIGH SCHOOL FRIEND AND IT IS STILL IN BUSINESS, NOW RE-MANUFACTURING ELECTRONIC TEST AND MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENTS, SEE: WWW.FOURDESIGNS.COM). I KNOW THAT THERE IS A LOT OF INTEREST IN THE ORIGINAL PRODUCTION RUN OF THESE MOTORCYCLES WITH THE "SAND-CAST" MAIN ENGINE CASES, BUT AESTHETICALLY, I ALWAYS PREFERRED THE FINISHED LOOK OF THE PAINTED DIE-CAST CASES. I DEFINITELY PREFER THE LOOK OF THE K0 MODEL WITH IT'S MATCHING PAINTED SIDE COVERS, AIR-BOX, AND HEADLIGHT BUCKET. THE K1 MODEL JUST DIDN'T HAVE THAT UNIQUE LOOK THAT THIS ORIGINAL MOTORCYCLE IS FAMOUS FOR.

    Great work. I’m half way through my first restoration.. bought an RD03 a couple of months ago. Currently down to engine & chassis. I love doing it & hope it’s somewhere near as nice as yours. It’s only the expense holding me back at the moment. Great vid, enjoy the bike ❤️🤍💙

      All sandcasts had the 8 bolts. Even some diecasts for a few months afterwards. If you are missing some, try yamiya750.com. They make nice replicas.

    Yea mate very nice job , but didn’t the first model CB have 4 x throttle cables for each carb ?

    • @ujeni77
      @ujeni77 Рік тому

      The first CB750 from 1969 to 1970 used a one-into-four throttle cable. Thats what I used here. In 1971, Honda changed the carb design which used two throttle cables.
